The Embederator paragraph type is a specialized tool within the UK Web Platform designed to safely integrate external interactive content. It removes the need for editors to handle complex "Embed Codes" manually, providing a simple form-based interface to display widgets like maps or external data.

Default Embed: UK Interactive Map

The platform currently provides a dedicated embed type for the UK Interactive Map. This allows you to pinpoint specific university buildings and display them within a responsive iframe.

Configuration Fields

When adding a UK Interactive Map via the Embederator, you will encounter the following fields:

  • Embed ID: A simple internal name to identify this map instance (e.g., "Student Center Map").
  • Building Number: The official four-digit building number found on maps.uky.edu. For example, you would use 0676 for the Bill Gatton Student Center.
  • iFrame Height: The vertical size of the map in pixels. The platform accepts a range between 300 and 2000 pixels.

Custom Embed Types

While the Interactive Map is the primary default, the Embederator is designed to be extensible. Sitebuilders have the ability to add additional types of embeds to accommodate specific departmental needs. Common examples include external CRM or inquiry forms, interactive data dashboards, or event-specific widgets.

Why Use the Embederator?

Using this paragraph type instead of raw HTML blocks offers several advantages for maintaining your site. By using the Embederator, you prevent common errors because you only fill in specific values, like a building number, while the platform handles the complex HTML markup behind the scenes.

Additionally, the UK Web Platform ensures that these embeds remain responsive, scaling correctly for both mobile and desktop users. This method also enhances site security; centralized management of embed types keeps the site protected and prevents broken code from affecting the rest of your page layout.

How to Add an Embederator

  1. Navigate to your page’s Paragraphs section.
  2. Choose Add Embederator from the list of available paragraph types.
  3. Fill in the Embed ID to label your work for internal reference.
  4. Enter the Building Number for the campus location you wish to highlight.
  5. Set your desired iFrame Height (300 is usually a great starting point).
  6. Click Create embederator and save your page.
