Overview

Menus are a collection of links (menu items) used to navigate your website. Menus are primarily displayed as a hierarchical list of links using Drupal's highly flexible blocks features across your site.  By default, new menu items are placed inside a built-in menu labeled Main Navigation, but Site Builders can also create custom menus.

Web Platform Menus

Main Navigation

The Main Navigation menu in the site header is the menu or set of links that allow visitors to navigate to the different sections and pages of the website.  The menu can include links to the main sections of the website, and important pages or content items This menu is designed to guide visitors quickly find what they need on the website. By default, only top-level menu items are included in the Web Platform's site header and the Main Navigation is continued in the sidebar.

Footer Menu

The Web platform also includes a default Footer Menu located in the left column of the footer.

Universal Utility Menu

The utility menu enables Content Editors and Managers the ability to add additional links to the site header across their entire site. These links are positioned are right justified in line with the site lockup.

Social Media Menu

The social media menu, located in the right column of the footer allower site owners to add links to their social media accounts. This menu automatically converts the social media link to an icon representing the social platform.

Walkthrough

To add a menu item to menus in the Web Platform, follow these steps:

  1. Log in to your web platform site and navigate to the page you would like to add to the menu.

  2. In the right sidebar open the "Menu settings" pane.

  3. Check on the "provide a menu link" option.

  4. The title of the menu item is automatically generated from the title of node, but you can optionally update the "Menu link title" field. This is the text that will be displayed for the menu item on the front-end of the website.

  5. Optionally add a description of the menu item.

  6. Select the parent menu item or leave as <main navigation> to be listed in the horizontal menu in the site header.

  7. Optionally select the weight of the menu item. This will affect the positioning of the item in the menu. (This step is easier in the "Menu" options. See below to navigate to the menu settings page.)

  8. When you are finished, click on the "Save" button on the content to add the menu item to the menu.

 

Additionally, you can add menu items directly to menus in the Web Platform, by following these steps:

  1. Log in to your web platform site and navigate to the "Structure" section.

  2. Click on the "Menus" link to open the menus admin page.

  3. Select the menu that you want to add the menu item to from the list of options.

  4. Click on the "Add menu item" button to open the menu item creation form.

  5. Enter the title of the menu item in the "Menu link title" field. This is the text that will be displayed for the menu item on the front-end of the website.

  6. In the "Path" field, enter the URL or internal Drupal path that you want the menu item to link to. This could be the URL of an external website, or the path of a page, article, or other content item on your Drupal website.

  7. If you want the menu item to be a submenu item of an existing menu item, select the parent menu item from the "Parent item" drop-down menu.

  8. When you are finished, click on the "Save" button to add the menu item to the menu.
